You have probably heard it said that everyone has a twin somewhere in the world. The twin of Morgan Freeman is living
in Erie County - Perkins Township, to be specific. His name is Robert Wiggins. He is 72 years old. (Morgan Freeman is
78 years old.) Robert has lived here since 1986. He moved here after the Ford plant in Michigan closed down and he was
transferred to the Sandusky plant.
In the 1990’s he noticed people were mistaking him for Morgan Freeman. Given the frequency
that it has been occurring Robert said, “I’m glad he’s not a villain.”
I asked if he had a favorite Morgan Freeman movie. He said, “All of them are good.
Unforgiven, Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy – all of his movies are
good movies”.
I asked him to share some stories about how the public responds to him as he lives
day-to-day. He had a litany of stories to share. Whenever he goes to the video store,
employees joke with him about his resemblance. The staff will say to him, “You haven’t
made any new movies, yet”.
He will reply, “No, not yet.
“I get it all the time. It doesn’t matter if I’m out eating, at a grocery store,
wherever I go. I was in Kroger’s and two little boys were behind
me. I didn’t know that they noticed me, but they came up to me.
The one boy said, “Aren’t you the man who played God
in that movie?”
“They were just tickled to death”, he said, as he laughed. “I
had to tell them that wasn’t me”.
There was another time when he and his wife were at
Ryan’s Restaurant. Robert explained, “This man came
up to us because his son was too shy to ask. The man
asked if I would take a picture with his son. So
his son came up and took a picture”.
“I was at a restaurant with my mom and my
sisters. A woman walked up to me with her
hand out,” he said.
She said, “It sure is nice to have lunch with you
Mr. Freeman”.
He said, “Ma’am, I am not Morgan Freeman”.
She stopped and looked at me and said,
“What? You could be”.
