CALL I interviewed Joey Supina, 77 years young and a champion of staying healthy and in recovery. He started a group called Aging Gracefully in Recovery, which meets at 5:30 p.m., every Wednesday at Sandusky Artisans, 138 E. Market Street, (downtown) Sandusky. Although any age may attend, Joey is sensitive to the differences of being an older person. He places an emphasis on appealing to those who are age 60 and better. Joey, himself has been in recovery for 51 years. “My sponsor has been in recovery for 65 years. He told me, ‘Joey, you will never grow old in this program.’ What he meant was I will always have the opportunity to sit down with people of all ages – and we talk!” As he leads Aging Gracefully in Recovery, this is the definition used… Recovery is a process of change, through which an individual achieves health and wellness; leads a self-directed life and strives to reach their full potential. - SAMHSA More often than not, those who attend are people who are living with addiction or mental health challenges – or both. One of the participants who attends is age 81 and been in recovery for 55 years. This group has something to offer individuals with all types of struggles. It could be opioids, alcohol, over-eating, gambling, shopping to elevate your mood, as well as, being intentional about not socializing. Joey explained, “Addiction happens in isolation and recovery happens in community.” You can replace the word “addiction” with any unhealthy behavior. I asked Joey, “What do you get out of it?” He said, “It keeps me young. I have much more to learn. As life goes on, I never want to think that I know it all. My exploration in life is still on going. I know there will be challenges. Challenges can be more easily overcome with the help of others.” Aging Gracefully: Recovery Lifestyle Is Healthy for All By Sue Daugherty 18
