Services to Support Independence Nutrition OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2024 From the Director When you have your health, you have your wealth! Health is something we take for granted until we start to lose it. Some are fortunate to have a “wake-up call.” By that, I mean a loss of health and/or independent functioning, yet through medical treatment one’s health / function is restored. Others are not so fortunate. This is especially true in later life. Compared to adults under the age of 60, older adults are less resilient. On page 9 , discover proof that later life is not too late to improve your ability to function, independently. In this issue, you will read articles about what YOU can do to maintain and improve your health, as you continue to grow older in Erie County. Be sure to read about these free programs - Aging, Diabetes and Your Feet, page 22 and I’ve Fallen and I CAN Get Up, page 7 . Read about the retreat on healthy aging. It requires a refundable deposit (Live Later, Live Better, page 4) , which is returned to you, before you leave. Finally, Serving Our Seniors has programs to pay the portion of dental care services that is unaffordable for your circumstances (read Dental Care That You CAN Afford, page 7; Need Your Dentures Replaced? Page 11) . Connecting socially – in person – and engaging in uplifting experiences is another factor that maintains health and functional independence. If your social life is shrinking and you need more positive, helpful, influences in your life; or if you are spending too much time alone, read the articles on page 18, Recovery Lifestyle is Healthy for All People and Firelands Habitat for Humanity: A Volunteer Experience for Aging Well, page 20. Last but not least, take a trip down memory lane April 12, 2025 and come to Serving Our Seniors Spring Show - The Ed Sullivan & The Soul Train Show . Read the details on pages 14-16 . Stay well, Sue Daugherty 3
