Lois Johnson received the President’s Service Award for contributing more than 500 hours in the past year to Serving Our Seniors. Lois coordinates the drivers for the Out-of-Town Transportation program. Our drivers are all volunteers. Last year they volunteered 1,653 hours and drove over 38,900 miles to take clients to health care appointments outside of Erie County. Lois manages to keep the drivers’ scheduled and the program running smoothly each week. In 2017, she arranged for rides for 118 clients to 420 medical appointments. Patricia Stineman (a former volunteer) coordinates and trains volunteers in the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program. Serving Our Seniors is the only OSHIIP site in Erie County. Our volunteers educate Erie County residents at “Welcome To Medicare” classes, and offer individual counseling sessions (more than 800 held to date!) to ensure that clients obtain the health insurance that best meets their needs, often at a significant cost savings. Volunteers Bill Biehl, Keith Newton, and Ron Watts possess an exceptional level of understanding of Medicare insurance and how it works with OPERS, STRS, Medicare Advantage Plans and Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and Medicare Part D. Bill Rajewski and Peter Fitzgibbon (not pictured) are the newest counselors, and are learning Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans. A world of thanks to our extraordinary volunteers for their commitment and care of Erie County’s older adults!
