Scam letters look official. A person, who claimed to be Michael Burlington, a “banker” from TD Canada Trust Bank, wrote to Terry. The letterhead looked legitimate, with an actual address written as: PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL 77 Bloor St. W Toronto, ON M5S M2 Canada Delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, the author of the letter said Michael Burlington was the manager of a customer’s account for “ENGR. James Seagert“ (same last name as Terry’s). The letter went on to say that James Seagert was now deceased with no heirs, and that Terry could receive over $47 million, by following the bank’s legal procedures. Be aware that a scammer will try to enlist your confidence. The letter stated, “This transaction is 100% risk free. Please take note that this transaction requires all confidentiality at this stage and I believe that you are ready to keep this absolutely discreet until after the successful transfer of the funds to your bank account.” And then the clincher… “After the transfer of the funds to you, we shall share the funds in the ratio of 50% for me, and 50% for you.” Terry did the smart thing. He did not respond. If you get scam mail, and there’s plenty of it out there, toss it in the trash. If you received mail and are not sure if it’s a scam, call Serving Our Seniors at 419-624-1856.
