“How To Be
Your Own Health Care Advocate”
course. It is free to Erie County residents,
age 60+. It does require regular monthly
attendance from April 2014 through
December 2014. Tina Elmlinger, RN, who
is employed by Serving Our Seniors, is
the trainer.
The course begins with a “Functional Fitness Assessment”.
This will give you information about your physical ability to
function and how you compare with the national norms in
your age group.
Erie County resident, Rosemarie, is taking
the course now. She said, “I liked the
functional ftness test. All of the results
I had were normal or better than normal.
I was surprised about that and it had a
motivational effect for me”.
“I took the course because I try to take care of myself and
learn new things. I go to the eye doctor and the dentist, but I
don’t go to a medical doctor. I saw that one of the frst things
the course was going to teach is, “How to talk to your doctor”.
I learned how it is up to me to be prepared to talk to the doctor
as someone who is on my same level – not as someone who
is God-like. We have a responsibility to go to the offce with
questions prepared. I learned by doing this, I will be better
prepared to ask the doctor what I feel I need to know and not
wait for the doctor to interview me. I really like the course and
I think anyone who signs up for it will be glad that they did.”
