Serving Our Seniors Magazine April - June 2023

Perceptions of Aging By Judy Williams, Serving Our Seniors Board Member Serving Our Seniors works to create a positive attitude toward aging. Since I am a board member, I decided to try and learn what the young generation thinks of people who are older in age. To do this, I interviewed some young Vermilion residents. This is part one of a four-part series. I hope you find it interesting. I talked to Kevin Rosser, who graduated high school in 2015. I also interviewed two seniors at Vermilion High School - Hayden Valenti, Patrick Anders; and one recent Vermilion graduate, Molly Wade. In this article, I will share the perspectives of Kevin Rosser. I asked him to tell me five words he believes describes people of older age. Kevin is an associate at Best Buy. He said he has found older adults to be, “Receptive, stubborn, overall compassionate, honest, and they want a straight shooter when it comes to explaining technology (short and sweet).” He said to me, “My grandfather always wanted to learn. He never let a day go by without telling me something he learned. He had an unwavering goal to be as kind as possible. It may be a cliché, but he believed patience is a virtue. He stressed slowing down and live for the moment.” It was clear to me that the time he spent with his grandfather made a positive impression on Kevin. In the July-September 2023 issue of Serving Our Seniors Magazine, I’ll will write about my interview with Haden Valenti. If you call Serving Our Seniors office and ask to speak with Tammy, don’t be surprised if we tell you, “No.” On April 1, 2023 our co-worker, Tammy retired. She had a rich career history in health care and working for Catholic Charities as a court appointed guardian. When she was hired to work at Serving Our Seniors as a Senior Advocate Assistant, she brought her knowledge with her. What a help she has been to Serving Our Seniors’ ability to advocate for you. Although we don’t want to see her go, we do want her to enjoy her retirement with your husband and new puppy. Congratulations, Tammy! Judy Williams Kevin Rosser Our Co-Worker, Tammy, Retires 22
