Serving Our Seniors Magazine July - September 2025
The length of time a spouse or family member fills the role of caregiver is, normally, multiple years. Caregivers are often overly dedicated to the point of sacrificing their own well-being while caring for the person they love. Although this decision is well intended, it is shortsighted. An older adult is not as resilient as a young or middle-aged adult. This is why it is important for older caregivers to take care of themselves. This is easier said than done. Not only is it a matter of granting oneself permission to take a break from caregiving responsibilities, it is a financial decision, too. The Erie County Health Department operates a day center for adults living with memory impairment; and adults who may be isolated and need socialization or daytime supervision. The day center is called Compass Point Senior Enrichment Center, 795 Bardshar Rd, Sandusky. It opens at 7:30 am and closes at 5:30 pm, Monday – Thursday. Closed on federal holidays. Care can be provided for a ½ day or a full day and can be customized, based on the center’s hours of operation. Compass Point is staffed to provide a safe environment with engaging socialization and recreational activities, snacks and lunch. Nursing staff assists with medications and personal care needs, if desired. The cost is $45.00 for a ½ day and $81.50 for a full day. Transportation is also available for a fee. If this cost is not affordable for your circumstances, Serving Our Seniors can help Erie County caregivers, age 60+. Through cost-sharing (see pg 17), Serving Our Seniors can provide a Caregiver Respite Voucher, to help the caregiver take a much needed break by covering the portion of care costs the caregiver wouldn’t otherwise be able to manage. To learn more about Compass Point stop by and tour or call 419-502-1020. To learn more about the Caregiver Respite Voucher call Serving Our Seniors at 419-624-1856.
