Did you know that less than 20% of older adults get the recommended amount of exercise? As people age, they can lose the strength and endurance required to perform common everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs and doing household chores. The good news is that participation in an exercise program, which includes strength training, can slow down this decline. Older people can live happier, healthier, independent lives in their later years! We conducted an 8-week pilot study with 14 sedentary male and female participants. The ages ranged from 64-97. The Senior Fitness Test was administered as a pre-test and post-test. It assessed upper and lower body strength, agility and functional mobility. Participants attended two - 45 minute exercise classes per week. The classes emphasized functional movements and core training. At the completion of the program, fitness gains were seen in every category tested. In addition, participants were able to meet 75% of the fitness standards necessary for independent living. The biggest gains were in upper body, grip strength, and flexibility. Participants reported that they felt the program improved their balance, made them stronger, helped them to move better, and they had less joint discomfort. Participants enjoyed the group class setting, learning new exercises and the social interaction with friends. Serving Our Seniors will start the next phase of the exercise program in July 2025.
