Serving Our Seniors has teamed up with Sandusky Recreation and Sandusky Schools to develop ways to support older grandparents (age 60+) who are raising grandchildren. Over the summer, 9 older grandparents participated in a Grandparent Respite Program. Out of the 15 grandchildren, two to five grandchildren participated in Summer Break Camp at Sandusky Rec Center. This gave grandparents respite and it gave the grandchildren 4 fun-filled days / week, which included teaching the children character development and sensitivity to aging. Jennifer Ashburn is a proud 72 year old, retired educator. She volunteered her time to work with all interested children at Summer Break Camp. Tondra Frisby, Youth Recreation Supervisor, asked Jennifer if she would work with the children to build character and sensitivity to aging. Being a literacy advocate, Jennifer came up with a program. She named it “The Poetry of My Grandmother’s Love.” The children learned to write and read different types of poetry and they learned songs about loving their grandmothers.
