Serving Our Seniors Magazine

Today, 30% of Erie County’s total population is age 60 or older. The last baby-boomer turned age 60 in 2024. As this age group continues to age, the U.S. census projects 4,035 will be age 80 and older by 2035. It is becoming increasingly clear, if older adults are to maintain their health and ability to function independently, the need for help and support in later life is not going away. Although we do not know the specific challenges ahead of us, we anticipate today’s 65 year old will have much different needs when they turn age 80 or 90, than what is needed today. The same is true for today’s 45+ year olds. What federal social safety nets will exist in 20 years? How will the Gen X and the Millenials be supported as older Americans? Serving Our Seniors is meeting the needs of Erie County’s aging population with foresight and purpose through the Fund for the Future Campaign —a long-term initiative designed to ensure older adults can live safely, maintain their health, functional independence, and belong to a community that treats them with dignity and respect. The goal is simple and powerful: prepare for tomorrow’s unknown by building financial security today. We are asking community members, businesses, and friends to consider making a gift. It can be a one-time donation or pledged over three years to support the future needs of our aging population. Contributions donated to this fund are not spent. Instead, the donations to Serving Our Seniors Fund for the Future are invested in a permanent endowment, managed by the Erie County Community Foundation, and ensuring a reliable source of funding for generations to come. No one knows, specifically, what social supports older adults will need in 10, 20, or 30 years. Your donation today means we can meet the needs of the future. By helping us build a future where growing older in Erie County doesn’t mean facing challenges alone. Ensure that Serving Our Seniors remains an effective partner and advocate–not just for you, in 10 or 15 years, but for your children and grandchildren, as well.
