Last spring, she and her fellow Master Gardeners partnered with two local food banks to teach non-gardeners how to grow a “Spaghetti Pot.” Gaye said, “We wanted to show people who haven’t had a garden, how easy it is to grow a vegetable garden, even in limited space.” In the Spring of 2025, the Master Gardeners taught a short course about container gardens. They helped 12 people, of all ages, learn how to use a five-gallon bucket to grow plants. “In that bucket we planted everything needed to make spaghetti sauce–tomato, onion, basil, and a pepper.” Once the participants learned how to plant and take care of their pot, they were given a bucket, and the four plants to take home and nurture. The Master Gardeners would like to teach another small group of interested adults, age 60+, in the Spring of 2026. “This is an opportunity for us to teach grandmothers and grandfathers the “how to” and they can share with their kids, the wisdom of where their food comes from. Food does not come from the gas station. It comes from the ground. You can make something happen with just a little bit of rich soil.
