Six Erie County Residents Tell You Why They
Are Proud of Their Age & How You Can Be Too
Nancy McKeen, 76
says, “I am very happy to have
reached this age.” Nancy’s mom died
at age 69 and her dad at 71. “I have
enjoyed watching my fve wonderful
grandsons grow to become adults.”
Two are married and one will soon
be married; and she has two great-
grandchildren. “Just seeing their
pictures come across my computer is
just absolutely wonderful. I get to see
the next generation of our family and that makes me
very happy.”
Nancy doesn’t have any qualms about her age – nor
should she. That’s what makes her vogue. She retired
as an Erie County Commissioner at age 71-1/2
years old. “I do love retirement, but I also think that
the longer you work, the better you are. In retrospect
I should have kept working four or fve more years. I
love being busy”.
Nancy’s secret - “Always have something to do. When
you know you have something to do, you get out of
bed, you move, you get things done – and you feel
better”! Relationships are crucial, too. “For me, I like
having someone to do for.” She is in a relationship
with a signifcant other and she values her relationship
with Larry. “We watch out for each other. I also have
two attentive children, two incredible sisters and a
wonderful niece who are always there for me. Being
needed is so important”.
David Moon, 82
is proud of his age
and the fact that he is in very, very,
good health! “What keeps me young
is I enjoy my very young friends”. He
has friends in their early 30’s and they
go to Cedar Point together. Last year
they went to Florida for a Super Bowl
Weekend. Next he will be going on a cruise with a
friend who is age 67.
For 31 years he has been fnancial secretary of his
church. “It looks like I’ll have to die to get out of this
job”, he says as he starts laughing. He also holds
positions with the Heritage Society and the Berlin
Historical Society, too.
Living on a farm and raising sheep is motivating for
him. “Each day I know that I have to get up in the
morning. I know I have to tend to my sheep … and I
enjoy them”.
His advice to others, “Accept your age and make the
best of it. Always realize that if you have a limitation,
there is someone else out there who has it more
diffcult than you. Don’t sit around and dwell on it.
Cultivate your friendships and enjoy them!”
Rev. Tom Darden, 84
“This is the
best time in life. At this age you have
lived long enough to make the right
decisions. You now know all of the
things you wished you had known
when you were young”.
I asked him if he was embarrassed by
being his advanced age. His reply was marvelous. He
said, “I can’t understand a person praying and asking
for blessings and not wanting to grow old. Getting old
is a blessing. Blessings are an answer to prayer”.
“What motivates me to get out of bed is my desire to
read. I am a minister and in order to prepare myself,
to share something positive with other people, I must
continue to study. I get up at 5:00 am or 6:00 am. I go
to my study and I read. I can assure you that no one
will bother you at that hour of the morning.” He says,
