Corporal Richard V. Davie,
(Sandusky) Army.
Drafted in 1945 at the age of 18,
Dick joined the Army and was
trained as a machine gunner and
was part of the 11th Airborne
Division. After basic training he was
sent to Japan, which was after the
atom bomb had been dropped on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He spent 18 months in Japan,
made seven non-combat jumps. He was honorably
discharged from the Army in 1946 and was in the Army
Reserves for 6 years.
Chief Petty Offcer, John Culp,
(Port Clinton) U. S. Navy.
In 1959, he enlisted at age 18 and
was on active duty for 4 years.
After boot camp in Great Lakes,
IL, he graduated from submarine
school in 1960 and worked as an
electrician. In 1963 he joined the
Naval Reserve. In 1967 he was
active duty in the 6 day Israeli-Arab
War. In 1997 he retired from Ford
and returned to active duty for two
months working on a frigate in the
Southern Caribbean. He was part
of a team that successfully stopped
drugs being traffcked. During his 41
years and 9 months he served on
9 submarines, 7 surface ships, and
on the Commander Submarine Atlantic staff, Norfolk,
Virginia. He continues to serve on military honors guard
for military funerals.
Karen Walderzak,
(Perkins Twp), Navy.
Enlisted in the US Navy on Dec. 7,
1961 at age 18. Her entire company
enlisted on the 20th Anniversary of
the attack on Pearl Harbor. Only two
women per month from each state
could be accepted. At boot camp
in Bainbridge, MD she was a Drill
Team Leader. After Boot Camp, on
Feb. 16, 1962 she received training
as a “Medic” at Hospital Corpsman
“A” School at Great Lakes Naval
Training Command in North
Chicago, Illinois. She was stationed
at the Naval Air Station Hospital in
Memphis, TN. In 1963 she was transferred to Oakland
California and honorably discharged in June 1963.
Airman First Class Dan Leavell,
(Sandusky), Air Force.
Dan enlisted in the USAF, Nov.
4, 1952. His basic training was at
Sampson AFB, NY and his tech
school training was at FE Warren,
Cheyenne, WY, where he was
trained as an Organizational Supply
Specialist. His frst permanent
assignment was at Kelly AFB, San
Antonio, TX. Dan volunteered for
overseas duty and was sent to
the 37th RSM (Radio Squadron
Mobile), which later became the 69
52nd RSM RAF (Royal Air Force)
Station, Kirk Newton, (Edinburgh)
Scotland. He achieved the rank of
A/1c and received an Honorable
Discharge on October 26, 1956.
