If you have ever volunteered for Serving
Our Seniors to be an e-mail pal with a
Perkins High School sociology student or
to come to class to talk about
“What it’s
like to be age 90+,” What it was like to
live through the civil rights movement
,
to play “What’s My Line?”, card games
or board games
with the sociology students; or to show
how you danced when you were a teenager, then you
know PHS Sociology Teacher, Joe Bores.
Joe Bores has been teaching sociology and psychology at
PHS since 2003. At the end of the 2015 school year Joe
retired. It was Joe’s teaching style that made gerontology
come to life at Perkins High School. It was so successful
PHS went from offering one sociology class per semester
to offering four sociology classes/semester. The students
loved the learning experience!
Joe Bores:
He Brought the Sociology of Aging To Life at PHS
By Sue Daugherty
I asked him his philosophy on aging and he replied, “I do
not think about getting older and I do not equate retirement
with getting older. Getting older is too far in the future to
think about. I look at retirement as something new and
exciting in life. It’s like changing careers”.
