Ron Matthews’ Fountain of Youth:
ROLLERBLADING!
Ron and Myrna Matthews moved from Michigan to Erie
County, Ohio a year ago. He started rollerblading at age
57. In 1994 his daughter, Terry Lyster, came over to her
parent’s home with an extra pair of rollerblades and said
“I just love this.” He tried it and he got hooked, too!
While in Michigan, Myrna, his wife of 56 years,
accompanied Ron on some of his rollerblading workouts.
She drove the car while he was rollerblading and clocked
him at 25 mph going downhill.
What motivates him? “I just love to do it. I think it’s the
cat’s meow. I can’t wait to put on my skates on and go
out and do it.” His wife will attest that he is out there on
the road come rain or shine. He said, “When it rains it’s
more like ice skating. It’s not that bad.”
Myrna said, “Ron has always been active. He has always
walked. He’s had a treadmill. He’s just one of those
people who has to be on the go.” In the winter, when he
can’t rollerblade, he shovels snow.
He’s proud to be 77 years old. In fact, he says he brags
about it. “I never thought I would live this long. My father
died at 42 years old. My uncle died at 52 years old.”
“I still water ski. I have to prove a point that I can still
do it.” He says his daily 4.2 miles of rollerblading is
responsible for the leg strength he needs for water skiing.
He’s in perfect health. He takes no medication, has
normal blood pressure, a resting heart rate of 66 and
a positive attitude. You can see Ron in rollerblading action
