Its purpose was for those who represent older Erie County residents in Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, U.S. Senator Jon Husted and U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno — an opportunity to explain what is being done to prevent the projected financial short fall in Social Security Retirement and Medicare in 2032. U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur was the only federal legislator who accepted the invitation. The two Senators declined. However, a week before the forum, U.S. Congresswoman Kaptur cancelled. No specific reason was given for Will There Be a Forum about the Looming Depletion of Social Security & Medicare? the cancellation, although it was public knowledge that the Congresswoman and her vehicle had been involved in a hit and run car crash. Without the congresswoman, the President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, Maya McGuineas withdrew her offer to attend. If there is to be a forum in Erie County to discuss what is being done to preserve Social Security and Medicare before 2032, two things are required: 1. Waiting until after 2027. Both Congresswoman Kaptur and Senator Husted are up for election this November 2026. 2. A strong pressure campaign by Erie County older adults demanding those who represent them in federal government show up and answer questions. In January 2027, call those who represent you in Washington, D.C. In the words of Erie County resident, Cheryl Talley- Sharp, “Closed mouths do not get fed.” Marcy Kaptur Maya McGuineas 16
