Serving Our Seniors Magazine: October - December 2026
Meet Eloise, a Vermilion-native crafter. Eloise was born to a family of six. Her father fabricated steel fishing boats under Mark’s welding and her paternal grandmother taught her how to crochet. In 1952, Eloise graduated from Providence School of Nursing, located in Sandusky, Ohio. She worked as a registered nurse for Good Samaritan Hospital and Memorial Hospital (since renamed Firelands Health), while raising her children with her first husband. Eloise has delved into many crafts since her childhood. She now knows Swedish weaving, cross stitch, and more. She has made nine cross-stitch baby blankets for her grandchildren. The most recent one made was for her one-month-old grandson. She quips, “If I have a pattern to follow, I can make almost anything.” Eloise has donated some of her afghans to cancer patients and to hospice. She loves life and has visited 50 states and lived all over the country. Her favorite trip was driving to Alaska in a RV Caravan. She has lived in Arizona for 10 years and Minnesota for almost another 10 years. She has been widowed three times and said, “Maybe the good Lord put me in these various places to take care of these gentlemen.” Eloise: 90+ Years of Creativity, Courage & Curiosity By India Gray At age 90+, Eloise lives alone and with one of her daughters over seeing things, as needed. She has six children, two stepchildren, 13 grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and two living siblings. Her family lives all over the country. Today, she prefers completing 1,000-piece puzzles to needle work. She said, “My kids keep saying ‘Well, keep doing your puzzles and you’ll live to be a hundred’.” If you use an iPhone or iPad, YouTube has channels to help learn how to use your smart device, better.
