When the Treatment Really
Requires a Dentist
One day David was talking to Nancy Rodriguez, a Senior Advocate
Assistant at Serving Our Seniors, and she told David about the grant
Serving Our Seniors received for the Dental Project, because he had
inquired in the past about his need to see a dentist. His experience
was that dentists require payment up front. He didn’t see how he could
afford to pay for all the dental care he would need.
“I admit I didn’t take good care of my teeth. I was having a lot of
toothaches. To treat it I would buy the ointment for toothache pain.”
The treatment he really needed was for a dentist to treat four cavities
and pull two teeth.
To help him afford this treatment, David applied to Serving Our
Seniors “Dental Project”. The Dental Project isn’t free dental care, it is
affordable dental care.
“Some people take things for granted in life and I might have been one
of them, but now I appreciate the little things. As you get older, you get
wiser. You see things differently,” said David.
“I haven’t seen a dentist in almost a decade. I was having a lot of
toothaches. I would just keep getting numbing ointment to deal with
it. Seeing a dentist wasn’t really affordable. So I didn’t bother with it. I
think this dental program is a real good program.”
The Dental Project is limited to Erie County residents, ages 60+.
Since January 2016 we have helped nine clients, three of whom were
available for a photo. If you need, but can’t afford dental care, call
Serving Our Seniors at 419-624-1856 or 800-564-1856 and ask to
speak with a Senior Advocate Assistant.
Sam S. & Rose
Stein Foundation
Grants $10,000
to Continue
Denture Project
Thanks to the Sam S. & Rose Stein
Foundation, Serving Our Seniors will
be able to assist an estimated 7-10
Erie County residents, ages 60+, who
are in need of denture treatment,
and cannot afford it. We will be able
to assist another 7-10 older adults in
August 2017, thanks to their pledge
for another $10,000.00 for this cause.
The timing of this grant couldn’t have
been better! We are on the verge of
exhausting a different grant, which
we received for the Denture Project,
for $35,000.00 in January 2016.
With that funding, 15 Erie County
older adults received dentures and/
or partials - and an improved quality
of life for many years to come! Others
are still in the process of being fitted
with dentures.
If you can chew vegetables, fruit, and
meat, imagine what it would be like
to live on soup, soft foods like peanut
butter sandwiches, cottage cheese,
apple sauce and cereal. Or think
about deciding to eat the more dense/
fibrous foods and just simply chew
with pain.
If you are an Erie County resident,
age 60+, and need, but cannot
afford the high cost of dentures, you
should call us at 419-624-1856 or
800-564-1856. Those who have no
teeth are given first priority. Those
who need to have teeth extracted
before they receive dentures will need
to work with Serving Our Seniors to
coordinate the dental care with the
denture treatment.
