Telephone Scams: “They Seem To Know That I’m a Senior”
Jo Miller, age 69, called the Director of Serving Our
Seniors and asked if Serving Our Seniors sells the names
of those who receive Serving Our Seniors Magazine.
Sue Daugherty explained, “No, we do not. There are
legitimate companies that sell mailing lists, telephone
numbers and even e-mail addresses. This information
can be legally purchased by anyone willing to pay for the
information.”
Jo is on the Do Not Call Registry and frustrated that each
week she gets at least one or two calls from scammers or
people who want her to send them money.
“They seem to know that I’m a senior,” she said.
As a senior, she is very savvy on handling these nuisance
phone calls. “Now I screen my calls. If the person doesn’t
leave a message then it wasn’t important. I have gotten
the…YOU HAVE WON A FREE CRUISE, if you pay up
front; and the IRS calls,” just to name a few.
“As soon as they said, ‘This is the IRS,’ I said ‘Have a
good day.’ Then, I hung up on them.
“If I get someone soliciting me for money and they say to
me, ‘You have given us money in the past,’ I reply, ‘Who
is this?’ Then I say, ‘No, I have never given money to
you.’ Then I hang up.”
Jo said, “I have a friend who received The Grandparent
Scam Call. She didn’t fall for it, but it really shook her
up. They said her granddaughter was out of the state,
in trouble and needed money. The more questions she
asked of the caller, the less willing they were to answer.
Jo’s advice to others, “You have to be aggressive. You
can’t be nice. Just hang up on them.”
