Art & Later Life
Clela Neal, age 65, has always been
very artistic since she was a child. She
has made her living as an art instructor
and selling her own art.
Her classes are two to three hours
long per class. 90% of her classes are people age 50 +.
She teaches all over Lorain and Erie Counties, one of her
locations is at the Erie County Senior Center.
Clela said, “Art classes do more than teach art. They give
people an opportunity to meet others with a common
interest. It gives individuals a new social outlet and a
new creative outlet. I have seen people come into class
thinking they will
‘try this’
and then they discover they
have a talent they didn’t realize.”
Clela has two students, ages 70+, who have developed
into true artists. One paints individual greeting cards and
sells them at a gift shop on Kelleys Island. The other has
become an art instructor, herself.
“Water color painting is a great way to learn something
new, especially if you have an interest in being creative. If
you have a belief that you aren’t very good at this, often,
it’s not you. It was the person teaching you.”
“You make a lot of friends when learning to paint and it’s
a great way to relax. You can just get lost.”
“The best compliment I ever received was when I told my
class…
If I could do college all over again, I would have
majored in Art Therapy.”
A student said, “You don’t have
to. You already are an art therapist.”
